Metabolism

Metabolism

The diversity of techniques and formats in this collection, from an assortment of collages to usage of black acrylic in a calligraphic manner on transparent foil and canvas, shows Alma’s tendency to keep coming back to a specific theme – in this case the connection of the land and the sea – from a different angle. The name Connecting line was used in the first phase of this series, and its change into Metabolism demonstrates an evolution from concrete to abstract conceptualization; she is concentrated on the coexistence of the sea and the southern cliffs of her native island, but the essence of this series is found in the process of change, in the variability of landscape and her moods, the combination of which always creates new and different artistic results.

The composition is usually reduced to a simple line of the horizon, while the true richness of the painting comes out of its layers and structure. Even the residues of her specific brushes, made out of wood and plant leaves, can easily be found in the painting. Inspired by nature’s effortless manner of leaving traces on surfaces, Alma uses her natural brushes to explore different lines and traces, thus cultivating her sensibility for the unique and unexpected.

Alma’s drawing is an extended line of her life and lifestyle. She prefers to work with the unstoppable impulse, even if she makes mistakes, than to have any sort of calculation that might lead to certainty. In doing so she uses various handmade brushes to experiment and create texture. The brushes themselves look like peculiar ready-made objects that draw people’s attention.

TONI HORVATIĆ

The artist encourages a certain engagement contained in postfeminist connotations. She opposes her feminine Self to the principles of conservative art, thus opening a space for freedom and ”ordinary” thinking.
